Last week, we got a taste of our regular wedding season with this Humber Bay Park engagement session! And it was amazing. It was so nice to get back out into the field, spend time with our lovely couples, and take beautiful photos of people in love.

We didn’t get to meet Mena & Matt in person before their engagement session, but already, we’re excited for their wedding day! And their sweet story serves as a great example of how you never know how great a role a person will play in your life.

It’s your first year at university and you’re constantly meeting new people and forming connections. You meet your first friend at orientation and you either become best friends for the rest of your degree, or you drift apart as you form stronger connections with others you meet. Your dorm-mates could become like family, or you could be looking for your own apartment…or you could find yourself falling in love.

You never know how great a role a person will play in your life.

Mena and Matt met in their first year at university. They both went to McMaster in Hamilton, where they stayed in the same dorm. In their second year, they started dating, and eight years later, they’re planning for an October wedding! They’re relaxed, personable, and so sweet together. They’re the couple you’d love to go to brunch with. But they also have a spontaneous side: they were such good sports when we asked last minute if they’d mind stepping in the water for a few final shots. Absolute troopers!

Mena and Matt, thank you so much for entrusting us with capturing your most meaningful moments! You guys are so sweet and kind, and we love how you embraced last-minute ideas like adventurers. We hope you love these images and we can’t wait for your big day!

We have an extra special COVID engagement session story today!

For engagement sessions, couples usually have many choices to make their session their own. The season, day, location, outfits…these decisions help support the vision they have for themselves as a couple and for their big day. For this engagement session, Sofia and JĂ©rĂ©mie couldn’t pick where, when, or how. They could only make one choice: to have an engagement session.

Sofia and Jérémie are a particularly special couple: Sofia is our sister. She is gentle, kind, and gives the softest hugs. We got to shoot their proposal, their engagement, and hopefully their wedding!

Both our families have been going to the same camp for years, but didn’t know each other. Around 2016, all the kids that had grown up going to this camp started working there, including Sofia, JĂ©rĂ©mie, and one of our cousins, Zach (whose wedding we photographed last summer!). JĂ©rĂ©mie and Zach became fast friends and started conspiring to get their parents together. Zach’s father (our uncle) and JĂ©rĂ©mie’s mom had both died within weeks of each other a few summers earlier. Their conniving paid off and their parents married.

Sofia likes baking and singing while Jeremie likes working on a bachelor’s and master’s degree at the same time.

Fast forward a couple years: Sofia moved in with our cousins as she was going to school in the same city. Almost immediately, Sofia and JĂ©rĂ©mie were at odds. An example: Sofia likes baking and singing while JĂ©rĂ©mie likes working on a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree at the same time while holding two part-time jobs. But time is magical: JĂ©rĂ©mie began appreciating Sofia’s gentleness love for others, and Sofia started admiring JĂ©rĂ©mie’s hard work and steady disposition. They began hanging out together in the living room, watching movies and talking for hours. On humour alone they fit like a puzzle: JĂ©rĂ©mie is clever with a dash of goofy, and Sofia laughs until she cries. They started dating in December of 2018 and were engaged Christmas Eve 2019.

We had so many plans for their engagement session: we were going to go a castle or do the session in old Montreal. Then everything stopped. COVID-19 came to Canada. We were stuck. Because their June wedding plans were up in the air, we didn’t know if we’d get a chance to do an engagement session. Montreal was out of the question. Photography is not considered essential, so we couldn’t do the session in public. Thankfully, before things got too serious, Sofia and JĂ©rĂ©mie moved in with our family for the duration of the quarantine. But Samantha couldn’t join us. So instead of a sunrise old Montreal session in late April… the session had to be now, it had to be on our property, Samantha couldn’t join us, and they had to wear something they brought in their suitcases.

They could only make one choice: they were going to have an engagement session.

Not the typical conditions. But we were blessed. We have 15 acres of land so we had space to work with. Sofia and Jérémie had brought the outfits they were considering for the session without even telling us. Plus, we had beautiful weather and a beautiful couple.

Sofia and JĂ©rĂ©mie, you guys made this shoot so magical. Though our plans fell through, you guys didn’t skip a beat. You laughed, smiled, and joked so well no one would guess it was a Plan B COVID engagement session. You are such an amazing reminder of how couples should face difficulties: together and with love. Being able to photograph your engagement was so meaningful to us and we look forwards to revisiting these photos in the many years to come. We love you both!

We’re so excited to share this beautiful R.C. Harris water treatment plant engagement session with you all! Not only is it our first of the year, but it’s also at one of the most beautiful locations Toronto has to offer! Sometimes the most beautiful things are found in the most unexpected places. Like meeting your future spouse at a birthday party. Or having your engagement session at a water treatment plant. Jen and Paul have now experienced both.

Jen and Paul both went to the same university. They had mutual friends but didn’t meet until after graduation. It’s really anyone’s guess how many times they crossed paths on campus without even knowing it (or maybe that’s just the romantic in us…) It was only at a mutual friend’s birthday party that they finally met. One of their mutual friends had told Jen about Paul, about how she just had to get to know him. When they finally met, there was something special there. Definitely. And then she gave him the wrong phone number. It was an accident that thankfully Paul didn’t read too much into. He had been told about Jen, and knew that she wasn’t that type of girl. Besides, there had been something special there. Definitely. When the confusion cleared, they went with friends to a sports game and came out officially dating.

And then she gave him the wrong phone number.

Jen and Paul are the kind of couple that is so warm, friendly, and trusting, you immediately feel comfortable with them. Jen’s bright smile and Paul’s relaxed conversation cinched it for us: documenting their wedding will be so. much. fun. When we first suggested the R.C. Harris water treatment plant as a location for their engagement session, they were all for it! For some, having your engagement photos at a treatment plant might be a little unorthodox but Jen and Paul easily saw the beauty in the buildings!

Jen and Paul, you are two of the happiest, most easy-going, joyful people we’ve ever worked with! In just a few hours, we could see what drew you guys to each other in the first place and what you continue to see in each other today: you are both kind, sincere, and clearly have the most fun together! We are so excited to continue capturing your love for each other in just a few short months when you finally say “I do” in October! Until then, we hope these photos help to grow your love for each other for the months and years ahead!

This Kortright Centre engagement started with us really REALLY liking Becky and Joseph before we even meet them. Our first interaction, outside of email and messaging, was on our way to their client meeting. It was pouring. Dark, mean clouds and thick, round droplets that splashed high and wide when they hit the asphalt. We were looking forwards to sharing hot cups of coffee and tea with Becky and Joseph. But then Sam’s phone rang. We answered it.

“Hi! It’s Becky!”

We immediately liked her. We could hear the smile in her voice.

She asked for a rain check on the client meeting; the wind and rain were growing aggressive.

We said of course, exchanged a few pleasantries and finished the call.

I turned to Samantha and said, “I love her already.” She was sweet, spoke kindly, and was genuinely apologetic about the change in plans. Our excitement to meet them doubled immediately.

Fast forward to Becky and Joseph’s engagement session. From the moment they waved at us from down the parking lot, we knew we were in for an incredible afternoon. Becky and Joseph are personable and warm. So incredibly authentic and 100% themselves, even with almost perfect strangers! Ten minutes into the session and we felt like we had known them forever. Joseph makes Becky laugh on a dime (she may have one of the most joyful and contagious laugh I’ve heard) and from the way he looks at her, it’s obvious he’s deeply in love.

I turned to Samantha and said, “I love her already.”

Becky and Joseph are the kind of couple that already seem like a life-long team. What really stood out to us was the way they interacted with each other. Becky would be the one to gather their things and pack it up between locations, but Joseph wouldn’t let her carry any of the bags. They’d always be checking in with one another to make sure they were alright, and weren’t too cold. Joseph would make Becky laugh, and Becky would make sure Joseph was okay carrying all their things. And they were comfortable in these roles: It was like witnessing a small ecosystem, made up of intricate knowledge of each other.

Becky and Joseph, the afternoon we spent together at your Kortright Centre engagement felt so much more like we were just hanging out with friends than photographing a session. We love the way you care for and rely on one another, even in the small daily things (that is what life is made up of!) We can’t wait to hang out again at your wedding next year!

The summer before this Charles Sauriol engagement session, at one of our all-time favourite weddings, we got to work with the lovely Carmen Tan of Carmen Tan Events. And we get to do so again this coming year! Working with vendors who are kind and who you trust, can make or break the wedding experience. Carmen is an amazing planner and coordinator who manages to walk the fence between being organized and keeping everything on schedule, and caring for her couples with such love and encouragement. Planning a wedding can be stressful, but Carmen is a pro! We’re so excited to work with her again, and also to photograph what is going to be an amazing wedding with Sally and Jeffrey in 2020!

Jeffrey couldn’t get the thought of her out of his mind.

It’s not everyday that your best friend sets you up with your future spouse, plans your wedding, and is the maid of honour. Sally and Jeffrey have it made! Jeffrey told us the story of how he and Sally met: Sally, Jeffrey, and Carmen all ran in the same circles through the church community and groups. At one such community event, Carmen asked Jeffrey if he was seeing anyone. When he answered, “No.”, Carmen threw out, “What about Sally?” To everyone’s relief, Sally wasn’t there to overhear (and understandably reject any matchmaking attempt). But Jeffrey couldn’t get the thought of her out of his mind and eventually made his move.

Sally and Jeff, you two are so lovely! We really enjoyed getting to know you guys as we waded through high brush and anxiously watched the sky to see if the rain was going to start. And we’re so excited to see your vision for your wedding day come to life! Can’t wait for next June!! But in the meantime, these photos of your beautiful engagement will tide you over! Enjoy!

We are so excited to share this Don Valley Park engagement session, our first for the 2020 wedding season! The season of engagement flies by, so we love taking a couple hours, slowing down with our couples, and documenting this short but precious time in their lives! And Joy and KB were the perfect couple to get into our 2020 weddings! They’re sweet, kind, and have great taste in food! (Burger sauce for the win!)

When planning their engagement session, Joy and KB wanted somewhere that offered both nature and some urban elements. Joy had walked the Don Valley Brick Works Park trails (try saying that 10x really fast!) and loved the combination of the tall beautiful trees and the out-of-use train tracks that overlook the valley! By the time we finally arrived at the old rail line, we were huffing and puffing and our cheeks were very rosy, but it was worth the steep climb! We may have also waded through some burr bushes along the way…

The walk gave us an opportunity to get to know Joy and KB better, one of our favourite reasons to have an engagement session! Joy and KB officially met while they were serving in a youth ministry. They had run in similar circles for years, but the 4-year age gap meant they never overlapped in high school and university. What first attracted KB to Joy was how well she personified her name (we totally noticed this too!). Always smiling, laughing, and light-hearted! And it was so beautiful seeing the way KB watched his fiancĂ©e, with such gentleness in his eyes…

A big autumn sky and two souls in love. Is there anymore we could ask for?

Joy and KB, you guys were such a joy to photograph and get to know! (Sorry we just couldn’t resist!) You are so kind and sweet to one another, it warmed our hearts. We can’t wait for your beautiful wedding next year! Here are just a few of our favourite photos from our time together.

Guys, we are SO thrilled to share this financial district engagement session with you! Our excitement for this session may seem like an overreaction, but John is our brother, Naomi is one of Veronica’s best friends and they’ve liked each other for a decade. So this has been a long time coming.

Naomi and John “met” before Naomi was even born. Both sets of parents first got to know each other when they were pregnant with Naomi and Veronica. Growing up, the three of them (Naomi, John, and Veronica) were part of the same friend group that would hang out weekly. As they got into their teenage years, John and Naomi started liking each other. But then John went off to university and then so did Naomi. Despite attending different universities and losing touch, they hoped to find their way back to each other.

They hoped to find their way back to each other.

A few months before his graduation, John reached out to Naomi and they went out for lunch. They dated for 8 months and John proposed around Christmastime. (Naomi’s absolute favourite time of year–seriously, she starts singing “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” around July)

Although we won’t be able to shoot their wedding in November (we’re both in the bridal party), we were so happy to shoot their engagement. They pretty much gave us free rein on all the major decisions. We scouted a few weeks before, Veronica went shopping with Naomi, and the night before the session there may have been a small fashion show.

The session itself started out a little rough. It was incredibly hot and humid downtown (almost 30 degrees Celsius!) and John was wearing a full suit. It wasn’t easy, but these two are absolute rockstars! They pushed through the heat, the walking, and the Friday night crowds, and they are both absolute stunners in their photos! Their expressions translate so well on camera (John’s smile hasn’t changed from when he was a kid) and these guys are so clearly in love with their best friend!

Naomi and John, you guys are so so special to us! We never could have imagined that we’d get to walk along with you guys during this special time in this way! Getting to photograph first your proposal and now your engagement has been so meaningful for us and we will spend our entire lives being so thankful to have this memory! We love you guys so much and hope you enjoy your engagement photos as much as we enjoyed taking them!

To get to this Yorkville engagement session, we have to start 8 years ago. Carrie and Steven met at a church group: Steven was the guy all the girls liked. Friendly, funny, and kind, with just enough spunk to do a leprechaun jump while still maintaining decorum. A perfect balance, really. Carrie is like iced tea: sweet and refreshing. She noticed Steven all those years ago, but didn’t want to get involved. She’s not the kind of girl to compete for a guy’s attention. For a few years, they ran in the same circles and their paths crossed, but they didn’t really get a chance to know each other. Then they both attended a BBQ, where they didn’t know anyone else. They sat side by side and talked nearly the entire time.

It’s one of those long-time, easy-marinating types of love stories (8 years is long!). It’s a quiet kind of romance that feels like home.

But it’s not just the way they met. It’s also how they continue to live. Their love is greater than infatuation…their lives are a mission to serve others. They both work in their churches–Carrie in admin, and Steven as worship director–and even their side work is all about giving back to their communities. Steven is a music teacher and Carrie is the co-founder of Sparrow and Co., a garden and cafe that uses its profits to meet needs in the local community. (Check it out here!)

Their love oozes through their photos, in the gentle way they look at each other and in the funny little moments they are so comfortable leaning into. Even in the midst of the busy downtown crowds, these two look like they belong in one of those sweeping romantic epics.

Carrie and Steven, you two couldn’t be kinder, sweeter souls. We are so excited for your wedding (in only a few weeks!). You guys are beautiful, inside and out, and we can’t wait to get you in front of our cameras again. Here are some of our favourite photos from your engagement session. We hope you love them as much as we do. Which might be hard, because we love them a lot!

On a wet Friday afternoon, we made our way to the Unionville engagement session of two sweet souls. Eirwen and Stuart are clearly best friends. They never stopped smiling and spent most of the session pulling faces or falling over each other in laughter. Even as they told us how they met in high school, they were still getting their story straight, laughing as they realized they still didn’t know all the little details of how their story came together.

A Rainy Day Unionville Engagement Session

Although it drizzled for most of our time together, these two turned the session into the most fun walk in the rain we’ve ever had. After our walk and a fun start at Starubkcs, we made a quick stop at the local Old Firehall Confectionery. Now, I (Veronica) am obsessed with following couples and documenting their errands (errands are LIFE).

We love relationships based on friendship. The comfortability and intimacy is not only beautiful to see, but it translates so well onto camera! Eirwen and Stuart, thank you for being troopers in the rain and having so much fun with each other! We can’t wait for your wedding this summer!

One of our favourite parts of this job is meeting new people and developing genuine friendships over the course of an engagement. From the moment Jackie and David gifted us with amazing artisanal chocolate, we knew they’d be one of those couples we’d fall in love with! (jk, but really)

Back in October, we shot David’s cousin’s wedding. David and Jackie weren’t there, but David’s mother approached us and asked for a business card. A few months later, Jackie contacted us. From our very first communication, we knew they were different. They are so kind, warm, and welcoming! I remember thinking: “People aren’t usually this hospitable in public!”

Jackie & David’s Toronto Island engagement session was a little different than usual. We spent almost twice the amount of time we typically do with a couple. We met them before boarding the ferry and together we wandered around the Islands exploring for a couple of hours. Walking between locations gave us quite a bit of time to get to know one another. They had some amazing restaurant recommendations and shared the story of their long-time (they met in 7th grade) and long-distance (he studied in Ireland) romance. We also found out we shared some mutual friends (which is always such a cool thing for me!) If you’ve been following us on IG, you’ll know that the session ended with us running across the islands, trying to make the ferry. (We didn’t make it.)

These two have shown us so much kindness and we truly couldn’t be more honoured to capture their love! It has been (continues to be!) such a joy to be a part of this special time in their lives!
