A couple weeks ago, we got to help Sally and Jeff celebrate at their Artscape Wychwood Barns wedding reception! We hadn’t seen them since their engagement session in the fall of 2019, so we were ready to take more beautiful photos of them!

Sally and Jeff were married last summer, when gatherings were limited to five people. Instead of postponing, Sally and Jeff decided to go ahead with their original wedding date with their fathers as witnesses. Their mothers watched and celebrated outside the room through a window. Although we couldn’t be there ourselves, we were so touched by their example of sacrifices and compromises for the sake of love. And we were so blessed to see Sally and Jeff’s joy and hope through it all!

This time around, Sally and Jeff decided to have a socially-distanced receiving line to celebrate with some of the people they couldn’t connect with last year! With Artscape Wychwood Barns as a backdrop, Sally and Jeff got to have mini get-togethers with friends and family and safely send them off filled with good memories and amazing food from The Food Dudes. With a high-low satin gown, a navy and champagne colour pallet, and a gorgeous ride (check it out below!), Sally and Jeff had the perfect classic summer celebration!

Sally and Jeff, thank you so much for including us in your wedding celebration! It was such a joy to watch you connect with your loved ones and relive the warmth and celebration of your wedding day. And we’re so glad to get to give you guys a pseudo-anniversary session! Congratulations!

Cecilia and Josh’s Waterdown Farm wedding was a day filled with love, family, and lots and lots of warmth and sun! Cecilia and Josh’s engagement session last fall was beautiful but cloudy, so having a sunny day for their wedding made our photographer hearts incredibly happy!

This day was extra special because Cecilia officially became a vet on the same day as her wedding! Of course we had to start the day with some photos with her cat Pim! With his little bowtie, Pim was the cutest addition to the bridal party, and with the help of some bacon, he was pretty easy to entice for prep photos.

It was clear that Josh and Cecilia were so happy to be finally getting married! Having scheduled their day with lots of buffer time, they were able to soak in their day without distractions. Their intimate reception was fun and relaxed, with custom-labelled wine and family dogs lounging nearby. The dreamy sunset glow perfectly complimented the fresh and romantic summer details and we were even able to get gorgeous photos in the peony rows on the property! The day ended with a sparkler exit, closing the perfect summer celebration.

Cecilia and Josh, you guys were amazing!! From trusting us to beautifully capture your relationship to taking the time to just enjoy each other and your families, we couldn’t have imagined a better way to celebrate, and we can’t wait to see your love continue to grow through the years!

Glory and Tony’s beautiful Scarborough Bluffs engagement session was a long time coming. It was originally planned for October 2020, and we are so happy to finally get them in front of our camera!

Glory and Tony met in August of 2016, at a church volleyball game. They didn’t really have any overlapping mutual friends, so Tony knew he’d have to act before the end of summer. He asked her soon after their first meeting and they’ve been together ever since!

When Tony decided to propose, he wanted it to be meaningful to who they were as a couple. He decided to bring her to different spots around the city of Hamilton that were important to their relationship, ending up at a park by the water.

He led Glory down to an empty corner of the park, quiet and dark.

And there he asked her to be his wife.

When they arrived at the park, the entire space was filled and busy with people. Some friends had arrived early and set up their special corner with fairy lights and decor, but Tony wanted to wait until the area cleared. While waiting for the crowds to thin, Tony and Glory walked almost 20,000 steps. Tony had originally planned to propose at sunset, but by the time the park had started to clear, it was already dark.

Finally–finally!–Tony began leading Glory to the corner where the fairy lights glowed. As they got close, however, Tony realized that a party boat had parked nearby and was blasting music. He decided to press on, but as they got even closer, they into ran someone who was also playing music plus burning grass. The height of romance, truly.

It was dark out and Tony knew he couldn’t wait any longer. He led Glory down to another empty corner of the park, quiet and dark. And there he asked her to be his wife.

We loved celebrating this milestone at their Scarborough Bluffs engagement session, and we can’t wait for their upcoming wedding at Harding Waterfront Estates!

Glory and Tony, thank you so much for allowing us to capture your relationship! All the joy and laughter you guys brought with you to your session was so much fun! We’re so excited to see you guys laugh more together on your wedding day!

Today, Logan and I celebrate 3 years of marriage! In some ways it’s gone by so fast… in other ways, I can’t even remember what life was like beforehand.

Marriage has been amazing. No more saying goodbye at the end of the day. A built-in travel buddy. Knowing someone is committed to the relationship for the rest of our lives.

Wedding Photos by Hannah Belvedere Photography

But even with very similar family backgrounds (does anyone else watch It’s a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve?), Logan and I realized we can be pretty different.

I’m an ultra-planner, even on our days off work. I can be extreme with my habits, working out like crazy and then not working out for months on end. I get really excited about random small things (I still get excited every time we buy chocolate at the grocery store).

Logan, on the other hand, is the most balanced person I’ve ever met. He has gone on a run almost every second day for over a decade. Logan rests by not having plans. He enjoys running, and surfing, and having good conversations, but doesn’t get crazy excited about them.

So we’re different. We had done premarital counselling, so when we got married we knew we had the same deep values on faith, family, friends, and finances.

How you apply your values can look very different

But how you apply the same values can look very different! What does it mean to value family? How much time do you spend with each other’s families? How often? For how long? Does it count if you go visit and a family member isn’t there? Is going for a meal enough? Or do you want to spend a whole weekend with them every month? Even if you have the same expectations, what happens when you go through a busy season, or one of you can’t commit to once a month?

Once you’re having a good, solid conversation about something you disagree on, at what point do you say that having someone else’s thoughts might be valuable? Doesn’t that make the situation feel so much more serious?

One of the best pieces of marriage advice Logan and I received I want to pass on to you.  Here it is:

Don’t stop the counselling once you’re married.

Having a few counselling sessions already booked in for after your wedding normalizes the fact that you’ll want to talk through how you live out your values as a married couple!

This way, if you’re having a heated conversation, instead of having to escalate the problem by introducing the idea of sharing the problem with a counsellor, you can instead say “this is clearly very important to the both of us; maybe we can talk about it at our next counselling session and see how we can resolve it in a better way.”

Then you make a short list of things that have come up and discuss it at your next session! We had 3-4 sessions within our first year of marriage, and they were incredibly helpful. With time, we’ve had fewer sessions, but now if we’re having a hard time working through a problem, it’s so much easier to say “let’s bring this up next time we have a session.”

Before you’re married, you’re talking about your backgrounds and how you think about values, but you haven’t yet had the opportunity to see how each other lives out your values.

A Few Photos from our Sister’s Backyard Wedding

Marriage Advice for Engaged Couples

If you haven’t planned for premarital counselling sessions, maybe ask yourself “why not?” It’s such a great way to bring up conversations, values, and habits that may may otherwise not come up!

I can say having a clean kitchen table is important to me… but what does that mean? Do I need to spend 15 minutes cleaning it each day? Or can I have stacks of books indefinitely on it as long as the stack is nice and organized?

This may seem like a silly example, but we’re so used to our own habits that we often don’t even realize how they play into our values!

It’s so much easier to build in a habit of creating a predetermined space and time to talk through harder issues without having to make a big deal of the fact that we disagree.

Ladies, picking what to wear to an engagement session is one of the most important decisions you’re going to make as you prepare for your photos! You want something that is both beautiful now, but will also stand the test of time. In twenty plus years, you want to be able to look back on these photos and still feel and look absolutely beautiful, relevant, and classic!

Though everyone’s style is different and unique (and we love seeing our couples’ personalities come out in their outfit choices!), we’ve learned a few tricks that will not only help guide your decision making but are also universally flattering and look amazing on camera! Here are some of our top tips of what to wear that will bring your engagement session outfit to the next level!

1. Something Full Length

Unfortunately, there aren’t too many occasions in life to wear a full-length gown, so we love it when our brides-to-be decide to do it! It’s elegant, flattering, and romantic. Full-length gowns have the power to make people stand up straighter, look taller, get right into that romantic mood!

Financial District // Naomi & John

2. Something Neutral

Neutrals are universally flattering and timeless, and they ensure that you are the star of the photos! Neutrals include black, white, grey, beige, navy, blush, and every shade in between. Plus, if you decide to go for cream or white, it will add a bridal touch that will look right at home on your wedding website or save the dates!

Novotel Hotel // Andrea & Michael

3. Something Flowy

Is there anything more romantic than a dress that flares out in a twirl and catches the sunlight? Not to mention, it’s probably the most comfortable thing to wear for a mid-summer session! It’s loose, cool, and looks insanely flattering as it helps accentuate your waist!

Toronto Islands // Jess & Wes

4. Something Taller

Heels. A girl’s worst enemy, but also her best friend. And no matter how comfortable or experienced you are wearing them, they are usually worth it for a couple hours during your engagement session. They have the power to make you look taller, your legs longer, your back straighter, and your outfit even more polished.

Osgoode Hall // Marianne & Andrew

5. Something Professional

When you’re having professional photos taken, you want to look your absolute best! Most professional bridal hair and make-up artists have a ton of experience creating looks that look equally good in person and in photos. We highly recommend hiring a professional to do your hair and makeup for your engagement session. Plus it’s the perfect occasion to have your wedding trials!

R.C. Harris // Jenny & Derrick

6. Something Covered

Over our years capturing absolutely gorgeous dresses and outfits, we’ve learned about a magic ingredient: Sleeves. Cap sleeves, short sleeves, long sleeves, off-shoulder, etc…no matter the type, sleeves are easy to find and can even contribute to an outfit’s overall feel! They’re flattering, add style, and keep the focus on what we’re all here for: your faces! Sleeveless dresses tend to take extra work to ensure your outfit stays in place, so keep an eye out for a dress with sleeves you love!

Jessica and Wesley’s Richmond Hill wedding is a beautiful example of how you don’t need to compromise the details when having to make last-minute changes to your wedding!

You may remember Jess and Wes from their Toronto Islands engagement session, one of our all-time favourites from 2020. Although their wedding day weather was unpredictable (think sunny morning followed by an afternoon of rainy downpours every 20 minutes on a day that called for no rain at all), Jess and Wes stayed committed to enjoying their day, their family, and each other. Originally planned for later this spring, their wedding was moved up as restrictions kept changing last minute. With an amazing team of vendors and family, Jess and Wes pulled together a warm, heartfelt, and romantic day full of thoughtful details.

Savouring everything, Jess and Wes lived in the moment.

Lighthearted and fun, they enjoyed as many wedding moments as possible. From sharing a first look to creating a reception feel for their family-only supper afterwards, their uncompromising focus allowed them to experience the feel of a pre-pandemic wedding where others might have given up hope. As we watched Wes tear up while Jess walked down her backyard aisle, we knew it would be one of our favourite memories. They savoured everything. They lived in the moment.

Jess and Wes, thank you for including us in your beautiful day. As you worked past restrictions, fickle weather, and last-minute vendor changes, you’ve inspired us to encourage other couples to hold on to their hope for a meaningful wedding day that will be remembered long after it is over. We’re so grateful for this chance to celebrate your new marriage. Congratulations!

Finding the perfect spot among all the possible engagement session locations in Toronto can be overwhelming! There are so many incredible places in and around the city that are both beautiful and fun to visit! Your engagement location is probably the most important decision you will make for your upcoming session: where you choose to have your photos can determine the entire feel and mood your gallery will have! You want the space to be beautiful and romantic, and give you the most amazing photos ever! Toronto has so many buildings, views, and locations that would each tell a different version of your engagement story! We are here to help you choose a location that you love, are confident with, and are excited for!

Below you will find a list of some of our favourite places we’ve photographed in Toronto, and we would love to visit again! They all come highly recommended by us and our couples have all love them as well! We’re excited to help you find a location you adore now and for the years to come as you look back on your photos!

1. Osgoode Hall

Osgoode Hall is the perfect place to go if you can’t decide between romantic architecture and beautiful greenery. With creamy stonework, cobblestones, iron fencing and gates (that are landmarks themselves), and mature trees that protect you from the view of the city, Osgoode Hall will give your photos a classic elegance that will only add to your own romantic story as you retell it to your children and grandchildren. It’s a timeless backdrop that will accentuate your fairy-tale photos.

Fun Fact

Built in 1832 as a law school, it now houses the Great Library of the Law Society as well as a number of courts. The building shows its age beautifully and is a designated National Historic Site. Nestled deep downtown, it’s accessible but still offers a fresh view than what you’d expect in the city.

2. R.C. Harris Treatment Plant

The R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant may seem like an unconventional location, but its beautiful cream stone and view of the lake makes it the perfect place if you want a clean but industrial backdrop to your photos. A fairly unknown location, your photos here will be unique, epic, and will contribute to the rich history the plant has! The stonework is pristine, and when reflecting the light of the setting sun can transform into the pearlescent blush you see below! If Art Deco is your thing, this is the place to have your engagement photos!

Fun Fact

Opened in 1941, the R.C. Harris Plant replaced a school and an amusement park that had once stood on the land. Known as the Palace of Purification, the plant provides approximately 30% of Toronto’s drinking water. It was intended to be both functional and an architectural marvel and was fashioned in the Art Deco style. The cathedral-like structure boasts marble entrances, unique teal trim, and an unparalleled view of Lake Ontario.

3. Toronto Islands

The third recommendation we have for engagement session locations in Toronto are the Toronto Islands! The Toronto Islands are well known for the summer crowds that wave in on ferries to make the most of the beaches, parks, and yacht clubs. And lesser known are beautiful and often bypassed sites that offer some of the most beautiful backdrops we’ve photographed. The islands are great for unexpected and fresh garden-inspired photos. Water features, stone bridges (that look like they once graced the cover of a Nicholas Sparks novel), and an incomparable view of the CN Tower all contribute to how amazing this location is.

4. Novotel Hotel

Nestled in Toronto’s downtown core, you’ll find the Novotel Hotel’s outdoor corridor on the south side of The Esplanade. The Chateau-style hotel is on a quieter street but faces popular restaurants and is still within walking district to Toronto’s theatre district.

Novotel’s most beautiful facade is its northern corridor which is a popular route for pedestrians on their morning and evening commutes. The corridor is a stunning ode to old-world grandeur and luxury, despite having only been built in 1979. The grey stone columns and arches create a clean and classic backdrop for your session, while the cast iron lanterns ground the photos and add a touch of romance.

5. Financial District

The financial district is one of the most underrated locations for engagement photos. The perfect location for a modern couple, the financial district has some of the most recognizable streets and buildings having been used as a replacement for New York City in many films and TV shows. At almost every corner there’s a whole new scene, made up of granite, metal, and glass. Clean lines and neutral tones communicate luxury, maturity, and an urbanity unique to Toronto. Its high-end meets street sense in the best way. It’s just really really cool.

Financial District // Naomi & John

6. Yorkville

Our final recommendation for engagement session locations in Toronto is Yorkville. Yorkville may be only steps away from the high-end shopping of Bloor Street, but it offers a quaint small-town feel with its historic buildings and niche shops. Warm and romantic, it’s a great place for engagement photos or a date, Hallmark-style!

Fun Fact

Yorkville has a incredibly varied and fascinating history, having been a breeding ground for authors like Margaret Atwood and musicians such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, who memorialized Yorkville Avenue in her song “Night in the City”. Now known for its Mink Mile (the 7th most expensive shopping street in the world), Yorkville is a hub of history, culture, shopping, and good food. It embodies the word “bustling” even on a mid-week evening and there’s always something beautiful to look at!

This Cambridge Mill anniversary session was such a wonderful way to get back into the rhythm of shooting again! When Ramona and Rabih shared that they wanted to celebrate the very first conversation they had, we were sold. We love celebrating the small moments! Those are the ones that often lead to especially sentimental memories. Ramona and Rabih got married during the pandemic and hadn’t had official photos taken! We were so happy to help memorialize what they weren’t able to on their wedding day, wearing their wedding outfits and including small mementos. We got to take some beautiful detail shots (something usually reserved for the wedding day itself), and Ramona wore a gorgeous classic cape.

Ramona and Rabih were enjoying themselves and enjoying their time together, which is our goal for every session we do.

It’s no secret that we love gorgeous light. So having the sun out in the middle of March is always something we’re extra grateful for. Although winter sessions can be a little more tricky to set up, we love giving tips on making the most of the season! The sun set just as we finished up on Cambridge Mill’s classic balcony overlooking the Grand River. The beautiful stonework surrounds the whole Mill, and there are beautiful places for photos both inside and outdoors! We walked around the building, getting to know each other and stopping for photos from different vantage points.

We could tell Ramona and Rabih were enjoying themselves and enjoying their time together, which is our goal for every session we do! This Cambridge Mill Anniversary Session was definitely a highlight, and we’re excited to share upcoming sessions in the next month!

Ramona and Rabih, thank you for including us in your celebration! We love how special it was to you both, and hope you love your images as much as we do!

To end 2020, we decided to look back on all our blogged sessions and share our favourite images and why we love them! We love seeing where our preferences unite and where they diverge, and how we each have something a little different perspective to every session and every couple!

One thing that we’re are constantly aware of and thankful for is how incredible our job is. Not only do we get to take beautiful images, but we are humbled to be chosen by our couples to capture their most precious moments and memories. As this year closes out, we wanted to look back on all the beautiful sessions we had despite the restrictions, lockdowns, and postponements. Whether we have a full season or zero sessions, we are so grateful that we get to work with and support amazing couples!

And with that, enjoy our favourite images from 2020, and let us know which photo YOU guys prefer!

2020 FAVOURITE IMAGES

Jen and Paul’s Engagement

“Jen and Paul’s engagement session was COLD. We loved this cozy moment they had while trying to warm up (and if you know me, you know I love cozy moments).”          – Samantha

“It’s hard to tell because Jen & Paul have such good poker faces, but it was so cold at this session. In these cases, we love it when couples use each other for warmth. Not only is it a good survival tactic, but it’s so intimate and cozy. Plus, pocket squares…”          – Veronica

Sofia and Jérémie’s Engagement

“Sofia and Jé’s engagement session took place on our parents’ property during lockdown. Though it may not have usually been our first choice, I loved how it turned out with the darkness of their outfits contrasted with the softly lit background.”          – Samantha

“This image captures so much of what I love. Two of my all-time favourite people in my favourite place on earth. I love how Sofia and Jérémie’s dark clothing stands out agains the background, but we still get to appreciate the golden fields.”          – Veronica

Eden and Sam’s Wedding

Eden and Sam got married in Eden’s backyard! A tiny intimate wedding meant that there wasn’t anywhere else to go for portraits, so we found a corner of the backyard and were able to get gorgeously intimate and romantic photos of the newly married couple. This is one of my all-time favourite images from this wedding!”          – Samantha

“Not only is this photo so intimate and quiet, but the cut of Eden’s dress leading into Sam’s clasped hands, creates one of the most flattering shapes.”          – Veronica

Sofia and Jérémie’s Wedding

This image is especially beautiful to me because it’s of my sister! I love that the focus is on the bouquet, but your eye is also drawn up to Sofia’s laughing smile. Maybe it’s the fact that there’s a colour pattern of green and white and eases your eye around the image to another focal point.”          – Samantha

“The fact that Sam and I both chose a portrait of Sofia shows just how much we adore our younger sister. Seeing her so joyful on her wedding day, despite having to sacrifice so many plans and expectations due to COVID, made me admire her so much.”          – Veronica

Mena and Matt’s Engagement

The juxtaposition between the buildings and the greenery gave something different to this image that I really love! Mena and Matt’s chill but classy vibe was another contrast that I felt made this image really work well.”          – Samantha

“This moment between Mena and Matt is so quiet and sweet. I love how the lines of their arms mirror each other and how the grass and Mena’s hair both catch the sunlight and turn gold.”          – Veronica

Jenny and Derrick’s Engagement

I love this image because, at the time, we were wanting to find new ways to capture this location. We love these stairs, but more than that, we loved how it created lines that draw you right into the moment of Jenny brushing hair away from her face, Derrick whispering “sweet nothings” in her ear.”          – Samantha

“The July sunset at Jenny and Derrick’s session turned this industrial location into a creamy paradise. Still can’t get over how amazing Jenny looks mid-stride.”          – Veronica

Shauna and Garrett’s Anniversary

We loved this spot for Shauna and Garrett’s anniversary session. Finding greenery without it overcrowding the image is always something I get excited about! I particularly love how the greenery encompasses the family in the middle, drawing our attention to the centre.”          – Samantha

“I love dogs. And I love puppies even more. This photo of Finlay, with his proud parents looking on, makes me so so happy.”          – Veronica

Danielle and Kevin’s Engagement

“I love the natural movement that comes with twirling. I love that this photo of Danielle and Kevin is soft in its movement, light, and expressions.”          – Samantha

“Another photo, that Samantha and I equally love. Maybe it’s the gorgeous light. Or how Kevin and Danielle look at each other. All we know is we adore this photo.”          – Veronica

Marianne and Andrew’s Engagement

We love finding where the light meets the shade, and when it’s combined with gorgeous architecture and outfits, we feel we’ve struck gold. The wind blowing through Marianne’s dress elevates this image even more in my eyes. It’s so full of romance.”          – Samantha

“One thing that Marianne and Andrew’s session really exemplifies is how each couple is so incredibly unique in how they photograph. You can have two couples in the same location, at the same time of day, both dressed to the nines, and yet, because of who they are as a couple, the entire feel of the session is different. For me, Marianne and Andrew’s session shined when it came to black and white movement. There were so many gorgeous moments we captured, that I had the hardest time choosing just one.”          – Veronica

Florence and Lloyd’s Engagement

We love when couples include additional romantic touches to their engagement sessions. When Florence and Lloyd brought out a gorgeous bouquet of daisies, we were thrilled to include them for more of an editorial feel!”          – Samantha

“Sam and I have very similar favourite images for Florence and Lloyd’s session. It’s the little differences in detail that tugs us in different directions. Two features in this photo made it my favourite of the session. A slight arch in Florence’s back creates such a flattering line, and the leaves floating on the water behind adds a touch of magic.”          – Veronica

Danielle and Kevin’s Wedding

I just love the classic feel to this image, from the black and white frames on the wall, to Danielle smiling at her groom as she comes down the staircase to join him. You almost feel like this image could join the ones hanging on the wall.”          – Samantha

“Another photo that grabs both our hearts! All the lines and angles make this image so clean and modern, but the black and white photo gallery and cathedral veil add such romance. Plus, Danielle’s warm smile steals the show.”          – Veronica

Jessica and Wesley’s Engagement

I have a hard time describing this photo.I love the softness of the colours, of the background, of Jess leaning her head on Wes. Every time I look at it, it just makes me so happy. I love this photo.”          – Samantha

“This session was an absolute goldmine of romance. I can’t even say that this photo was my absolute favourite, because I had so many favourite images! From the bridge, to the willow, to the little smiles on Jess and Wes’s face as they lean in for a kiss, everything about this photo makes me want to turn it into a stock photo so it can be enjoyed by more people.”          – Veronica

The Ashamalla’s Family Session

I love how you get the movement of a family, contrasted with an engagement session. Even though everyone in the family is looking at little guy doing his own thing, we’re drawn to the whole family as a unit, and to their joy.”          – Samantha

“I’ll admit it, I’m cheating. Sam’s favourite is probably mine as well. But since she shared it, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring these two absolute munchies to the show. I get cute aggression just looking at these photos.”          – Veronica

Stephanie & Alec’s Maternity

When Veronica and I took this image, our mouths dropped open. Steph and Alec are clearly models, and we loved the editorial feel to this maternity session.”          – Samantha

“Again, I’m cheating. But since I’m putting this post together, I can do whatever I want lol. Sam’s choice is my favourite as well, but I couldn’t help sharing this photo as well. Willow trees are instantaneous magic.”          Veronica

Cecilia & Josh’s Engagement

I love when an image feels intimate without being obvious. Although we do love to capture a romantic kiss, little details like how Josh is holding Cecilia and how they’re softly smiling, draws you into the moment.”         – Samantha

“Not only is this photo so gorgeous, but it was so much fun capturing it. Cecilia and Josh were absolute rockstars, willing to dip their toes in the *freezing* cold water (Lake Ontario in the autumn?). And then I realized that I had forgotten to bring a towel, and so gave them my scarf to dry their feet off. A bonding moment, and one that made me seriously admire them.”          – Veronica

Andrea & Michael’s Engagement

When you don’t see a couple’s eyes, you’re drawn to other elements of the photo, such as Andrea’s beautiful smile, or the flow of her skirt, or the pop of her foot. In this particular photo, the simple and clean colours bring out these elements even more, highlighting the romance of the details.”          – Samantha

“Formal portraits are always at the top of my list when it comes to favourite images. These photos are the ones that will be passed down and shared around. For Andrea and Michael’s portrait, I love how the clean yet sophisticated surroundings brings attention to the couple.”          – Veronica

As in countless areas of life, engagements and proposals go through their own seasonal changes.  Many couples get engaged between Christmas and Valentine’s Day and are looking to have their engagement session done in the spring. Another busy season occurs in the fall when couples often choose to book their wedding photographers. A lot of photographers have different preferences for the best season in which to take your engagement photos, and we are no exception. Here are some of our best tips for scheduling your seasonal engagement session to get beautifully romantic, light-driven, and classic photos that will be relevant and fresh for decades to come.

Your Seasonal Engagement Session

Spring Sessions

We love spring sessions. Leaves are growing back, beautiful blooms have sprung up everywhere, and we have sun again. We are lovers of sunlight, and if you can choose a season that is sun-heavy, you will make us very happy photographers. We also love spring sessions because our busier season hasn’t started yet, and we can get your engagement session images finished in record time. The sunset time changes drastically within the spring months, so we recommend looking up the sunset time for a specific day and subtracting 2 hours for your start time! Depending on when greenery comes out again, think about locations that have both beautiful architecture with nature nearby, so that no matter how the weather turns out, you have a beautiful backdrop!

Summer Sessions

Sessions in the summer are our favourites. They do however require flexibility since our weekends are mostly booked. We recommend weeknights or sunrise (sunrise sessions are especially great for busy locations!). In the summer, the sun is rising early and setting late, so it may be easier to schedule around work hours. We love greenery, but you’ll notice that more often than not, we try to keep our couples off the grass! This helps us consistently achieve our clean, romantic style!

Fall Sessions

Because fall sessions are so popular, we want to give extra tips to make it work! Since the weather is more unpredictable and it is cloudier, be prepared for a heavier, windier look! We recommend finding open and airy locations since forests and ravines will make your images darker, and you’re more likely to have a lot of orange and yellow colours bouncing onto your faces instead of beautiful, clean, natural light! We know the temptation is to include the gorgeous fall colours in your photos, but this is a great season to choose an urban setting over a “nature-heavy” one.

If you’re set on having those fall colours, look for open, wide areas where the foliage is more of a backdrop than a surrounding statement. We also suggest not wearing fall colours! This might seem counterintuitive, but wearing neutrals, pastels, or jewel tones will help the fall colours stand out more and prevent you from looking washed out!

As in spring, the sunset time changes drastically within these few months. Look up the sunset for a specific day and subtract 2 hours for your start time! The weather can also be quite dynamic. This makes it a great season to find locations that have both beautiful buildings and architecture with a park or trees nearby so you have lots of options!

Winter Sessions

Winter snow sessions can be magical. Just prepare yourselves for the experience itself to be a little more adventurous than the photos make it appear. With wind, it can be extremely cold. We recommend bringing hand warmers and keeping them in your pockets during the session. A colour palette with muted or jewel tones (instead of bright, bold colours) will photograph beautifully against the snow.

This is probably the only season we might suggest staying away from statement dresses and heels. We recommend leaning into the winter look, adding in a classy hat and scarf. A form-fitting peacoat could also be a flattering alternative to a dress.  If your session is before mid-March and the time change, don’t forget that the sun sets quite early! We’d be looking at starting your session mid-afternoon. Unless there’s a lot of snow on the ground, we recommend staying away from “green” areas, since the greenery will be mostly brown. Instead, make the most of the waterfront or beautiful buildings that offer unique backdrops!

Your Seasonal Engagement Session

We are prepared for anything on your wedding day, but we’re especially light-driven on your engagement session. You’ll notice that some tips stay the same across each season, such as staying away from seasonally-colourful areas. Remember that these are suggestions to give you an experience where you can be confident of the end result. If you love the look of our images, you’ll love the result that comes from following these tips. The final decision is up to you. We’re here to make your experience memorable in the best sense: to capture your relationship and love for each other. No matter the location, weather, and light, you are the focus of the images, and we’re so grateful to be a part of this season.

Your engagement season–no matter how long it is–is short when compared to how long life is. We want you to make the most of it and soak up every second. In the midst of hectic wedding planning, your engagement session is a way to freeze time and remember why you’re getting married. To slow down for an evening, take time for each other, get dressed up, and go on a date afterwards!
